Important ‐ |

A] No person shall be admitted as member (other than as Associate, Joint or Provisional member) except ‐- an individual, who is competent to contract under the Indian Contract Act;
- a firm, company or any other body corporate constituted under any law for the time being in force;
- a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 or registered or deemed to be registered, under Maharashtra Co‐operative Societies Act, 1960;
- a public trust registered under any law for the time being in force for the registration of such trusts
- the State Government or the Central Government or a local authority.

B] "Joint Member" means a person joining in an application for the registration of a housing society jointly, which is subsequently registered or a person who is duly admitted to Membership after its registration and who holds share, right, title and interest in the flat jointly but whose name does not stand first in the share certificate. [Section 154B-2(18)(b)] |

C] "Associate Member" means husband, wife, father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, nephew, niece a person duly admitted to Membership of a housing society on written recommendation of a Member to exercise his rights and duties with his written prior consent and whose name does not stand in the share certificate. D] "provisional Member" means a person who is duly admitted as a Member of a society temporarily after death of a Member on the basis of nomination till the admission of legal heir or heirs as the Member of the society in place of deceased Member. [Section 154B-2(18)(c)] |

E] Limit on Membership ‐ A housing society shall not admit to its Membership persons exceeding the number of flats or plots, as the case may be, available for allotment in that co-operative housing society. [Section 154B-5] |

However, a plot owners co‐operative housing society may admit to its Membership an organization (co-operative housing society, company, association, etc.) of flat purchasers, in case the plot owner had constructed and sold flats as per prevailing rules, in place of original plot owner Member. [Proviso to Section 154B-5] |
